What exactly is HOLGA?


The Holga is an inexpensive, medium format 120 film toy camera, made in China, appreciated for its low-fidelity aesthetic. The Holga's cheap construction and simple meniscus lens often yields pictures that display vignetting, blur, light leaks, and other distortions, black corners. The camera's quality problems have become a virtue among some photographers, with Holga photos winning awards and competitions in art and news photography.

What can we do with our Holga?


Shooting picture of course!! But more, you can modify your HOLGA camera. Don't worry about break it. Since it is a fun for DIY and price is reasonable, even if you break it just buy another one. That's why HOLGA is fun like no other camera, just do whatever you want!! 

What is the relationship between LOMO and HOLGA?


Some people may think HOLGA is produce by LOMO. Actually, LOMO is a word from Lomography, it represent a special feeling produce by special make camera such as HOLGA, LC-A and Superheadz. It also represent the snapshot and life style of this kind of camera. Don't Think just Shoot!! HOLGA is one of these special type of camera. HOLGA are produced by HOLGA factory. And Lomography is one of the seller of sellers. Lomography repack the camera in a different box. So technically, HOLGA is not belongs to Lomography or LOMO.

Is it HOLGA or WOCA, it looks the same? Is it fake? 


WOCA is the brand name using by HOLGA factory in the early stage. HOLGA has replaced WOCA in the later stage, and WOCA has fade out. So HOLGA and WOCA is the same. They are both from HOLGA factory.

What are the series HOLGA have?


HOLGA family start from 120 series using 120mm film such as 120 N, FN, GN, GFN, CFN, GCFN. 135 series using 35mm film such as K-202, K-220, 135, 135BC. 110 series use 110mm film such as MICRO-110. Now HOLGA has just produced the latest product such as 120WPC for Panorama, 120WPC-3D Pinhole camera with 3D feature, 120-3D with 3D feature. K-200N with Fisheye Len and 135 PC Pinhole camera for 135 series.

What is the letter "F" on the model no. means?

HOLGA manufacturer uses the letter "F" on the model no. for camera equipped with Flash. There are 2 types of flash for HOLGA series, White Flash or Color Flash. For model without Flash, the camera are equipped with hot shoe located on the top of the camera. You may need to purchase an external white flash or color flash separately. However it is more flexible, such as change the batteries with taking out the film (batteries locate inside of the camera) or you can change to a less or more powerful flash easily.

What is the letter "C" on the model no. means?


It means that HOLGA camera equipped with Color Flash. It includes White, Yellow, Red, Blue Flash. You can change the color by the wheel located on the top of the camera. Since there must be a flash equipped to be a color flash camera, so there is no such "CN" model. The model equipped color flash are "CFN" and "GCFN".

What is the letter "G" on the model no. means or What is the different between HOLGA 120 CFN and GCFN?


HOLGA uses the letter "G" on the model no. for camera equipped with Glass Lens. That means if you see an model start with a letter of "G", that camera is a glass lens camera such as GN, GFN, GCFN. Compared with a typical plastic lens, the glass lens will give you more clear and sharper picture. However, plastic lens HOLGA will create a more original HOLGA photograph since the first generation of  HOLGA is build with plastic lens. So, CFN is equipped with plastic lens and GCFN is equipped with glass lens.

What is the letter "PC" on the model no. means?


HOLGA uses the letter "PC" on the model no. for camera equipped with Pinhole feature. Such as 120WPC, 135PC.

What is the letter "W" on the model no. means?

HOLGA uses the letter "W" on the model no. for camera with Panorama feature. W for Wide.

What is the letter "BC" on the model no. means? Any difference between 135 and 135BC?


HOLGA uses the letter "BC" on the model no. for camera with black corner on the picture. That means picture taken by 135BC, you will find that there are black corner around the pictures where 135 doesn't have any. 135BC picture will give a tunnel vision feeling pictures.

What is B Mode and N Mode on the bottom for?


It is a switch to control the shutter. B Mode standard for Bulb mode. It will open the shutter as long as it can, until you release the shutter again after pressed. N Mode standard for Normal mode. HOLGA shutter design for open 1/100th second in Normal mode.

What is the different between 120mm film and 35mm film?

35mm film roll are the most common one which you can purchase in most of the store. The picture is in 4:3 scale, which widely use in most of the film camera. You can purchase 120mm film on internet or some of local develop shop. 120mm pictures are in square, this is why so special about HOLGA. There are 2 kind of masks ship with the camera. 6x6 mask give 12 pictures in one roll and 6x4 mask give 16 pictures in one roll.

Can I use 35mm film on HOLGA 120 camera?


Yes! You can purchase a 35mm adapter for HOLGA to use 35mm film roll. You can save money on film roll and developing, however it is not as special as a 6x6 picture.

What is POLGA or Holgaroid?


POLGA or Holgaroid is a name of a instant filmholder. It is a crossover product of HOLGA and Polaroid. You can use instant film to take photo by HOLGA 120 camera. It compatible with HOLGA 120 GCFN, CFN, GFN, FN, GN, N. 
 

Can I use Polaroid Instant Film on HOLGA? or Fujifilm?

Yes! You can use Polaroid instant film for HOLGA by install POLGA. Polaroid Instant Film: Viva Color, T-89, T-88, T-87, T-84, T-82. However, most of the Polaroid Instant Film has discontinued. Or use Fujifilm: FP-100C, FP100B, FP-400B, FP-3000B, 690, 125i, 669, 664, 663, 667.

Any rules or technique on using HOLGA for shooting?


No! But here are some golden rules of HOLGA 
•    Take your camera everywhere you go 
•    Use it any time- day & night 
•    HOLGA is not an interference in your life, but part of it 
•    try the shot from the hip 
•    approach the objects desire as close as possible 
•    Don't think (William Firebrace) 
•    Be fast 
•    You don't have to know beforehand what you captured on film 
•    Nor afterwards 
•    Don't worry about any rules 

Do I need a Darkroom Bag to change the film roll?

It depends on which kind of film you are using. For 120mm film, you don't need a Darkroom Bag. On the other hand, 35mm film required a darkroom bag to take out or install the film roll. You may install the roll in a darkroom, film develop lab. with darkroom box or the toilet of your hotel room with light off. Darkroom makes things much easier, especially during travel.

Can I install Fisheye on HOLGA camera?

Yes!! It probably the cheapest fisheye camera in the market. You can install a fisheye adapter on HOLGA 120 or 135 series to take fisheye picture. Or K200N has fisheye len included with the camera.

What is shutter cable for?


The shutter cable is use for pressed open the shutter of HOLGA. You will need it for shooting pictures take by B Mode, it will reduce the impact of the picture when pressed the shutter on the camera. And probably you will need a tripod as well. Other camera require a shutter cable are 120WPC, 120PC-3D, 135BC. 

 

Do I need a HOLGA Filter Set?


HOLGA has Filter Set for both 120 and 135 series. It helps photographer creates more dynamic pictures. It comes with filter holder, several color filters, focus color filters and split lens. 

Where can I get 120 film develop?


Since 120 film is a Medium Format Film, it require to develop in some of the professional lab. Most of the local photo store may not able to processed it for you. However it doesn't mean it is very rare to find, there are a lot of professional or hobbyists camera using 120 film as well.

There are many Holga models,it will be easy to mixed up at  the beginning. But just remember a few rules,you will be able to figure out each models' specification.

   G represents glass lens,then without G is plastic lens.

   N represents B shutter,tripod mount and 6x6 frame mask.

   F represents flash light,CF represents color flash light,without F is hot shoe only.
